Twelve hundred acres, an 1842 homestead, and more sky than any venue this close to Melbourne has a right to.
The Venue
Marnong sits at Mickleham, half an hour north of the CBD, on twelve hundred acres that roll away towards the Macedon Ranges. That scale is the whole point. Most Melbourne venues give you a room and a garden; Marnong gives you a horizon. Walk a couple up onto the hill at the right hour and you get frames that look like they were shot four hours from the city rather than thirty minutes.
The estate also has two completely different faces, which is unusual and very useful on film. There is the 1842 homestead — bluestone, iron lacework, deep verandahs, all the weight of a colonial property — and then there is the glass-and-timber pavilion with its exposed trusses, which is bright, modern and photographs nothing like the old house. A day here can move between the two, and the film gets texture from the contrast.
Then there is the working estate around it: the cellar door, the vineyard, La Vètta, the peacocks that wander the grounds and will absolutely walk into your ceremony photos. It is a venue with things happening in it, which beats a beautiful empty backdrop every time.

Why C2 at Marnong
The single biggest difference between a good Marnong film and an ordinary one is whether the team actually used the property. It is twelve hundred acres. The frames that make this venue — two people small against a hill, the valley opening behind them, the sky doing something extraordinary — require walking out there, with time in hand, before the light goes. A crew that stays near the building will produce a film that could have been shot anywhere.
It is also exposed country. There is no shelter on those hills, which means wind, fast-moving weather and light that changes by the minute. We watch the sky here more than at any other venue we shoot, because the difference between leaving at ten past and leaving at half past is the difference between a good frame and the one you hang on the wall.
And the estate rewards a bit of range. Heritage verandahs, a bright modern pavilion, vineyard rows, the cellar door — four distinct looks inside one property. We plan the day to use them rather than defaulting to whichever is nearest.

Planning Your Marnong Wedding
Protect the golden hour, properly. This is the one piece of advice that matters most here. The hills at Marnong are the reason to book it, and getting up there takes time — walking, in a dress, with a bridal party. Twenty minutes carved out of the reception is the best trade you will make all day, and it should be in the run sheet rather than negotiated on the night.
Plan for wind. Open country thirty minutes north of the city is breezier than a garden in the suburbs. It is often lovely on film — veils and dresses move beautifully — but it is worth knowing when you are choosing hair, and worth your celebrant using a proper microphone for an outdoor ceremony.
Use both faces of the estate. Couples tend to gravitate to one or the other. The 1842 homestead gives you warmth, texture and shade; the pavilion is bright, clean and modern. Shooting in both gives your film contrast that a single-look venue simply cannot.
It is closer than people assume. Half an hour from the CBD, which means guests are not making a weekend of it and you are not paying regional travel fees. You get a country wedding on a city timeline.
